Prostate medicine in Pakistan: what each option costs per month

Every pharmacy in this country lists a price per box. Nobody lists a price per month, which is the only number that matters when you are going to be on something for a year. We worked it out for all four channels, including ours.

There are four things a man in Pakistan can take for prostate trouble, and they are not variations of each other. They work on different parts of the problem, they cost wildly different amounts, and only one of the four will tell you what is inside it.

We are the makers of one of them, so read this knowing that. We have still put our own price at the top of the table rather than the bottom, and we have written down the two things our formula does not do.

What a month actually costs

One figure to hold on to: Rs 10,900 a month is Rs 363 a day. Tamsulosin at Rs 1,400 a month is Rs 47 a day — and you will be taking it for as long as the symptoms last, which for most men is the rest of their lives.

Tamsulosin and its relatives relax the muscle at the bladder neck. They work within days, which is why urologists reach for them first, and they are cheap. What they do not do is change anything about the gland — stop taking them and the symptom comes back the same week. Finasteride and dutasteride go after DHT instead, work over a year rather than a week, and bring sexual side effects that send a fair number of men looking for something else. That search is usually how people end up on this page.

Unani from Hamdard and Ajmal

The cheapest option in the country and, for a lot of families, the most trusted — Hamdard has been on our shelves for generations. The problem is not the tradition. It is that neither Hamdard nor Ajmal prints what is in the product. Gulmundene is sold for frequent urination in men over 40 with no ingredient list. Ghadudi is sold for enlarged prostate with no ingredient list. You are buying a name.

Saw palmetto supplements

Prozon, Prostamen, Prosnur, Herbiotics. These are proper products with proper labels and they are good value. The thing nobody explains is why one has 160 mg of saw palmetto, the next has 270 and the third has 450. It matters: the European trials that showed anything used 320 mg a day, so a 160 mg jar is half a dose and a 450 mg jar is a full one with room to spare. Buy on the milligram, not the brand. What none of them has is a second mechanism — one herb, one pathway.

Herbal capsules at the top of the market

Two products sit above Rs 6,000 in Pakistan. One is ours. The other is Prolan, which is rapeseed pollen made by Changchun Haiwai Pharmaceutical Group in Jilin, China, sold here as German, priced anywhere between Rs 6,000 and Rs 10,900 depending on the website, and printing no ingredient list on any of them.

About Prolan

Prolan is the product we get asked about most, so here is what we found when we looked it up properly.

The active ingredient is rapeseed pollen. The manufacturer is Changchun Haiwai Pharmaceutical Group in Jilin, China, where it is sold as film-coated tablets, twelve to a box, at three to four tablets three times a day. In Pakistan it appears as capsules, thirty or sixty to a box, one a day, and at least one seller lists its origin as Germany.

The price moves depending on where you look. Rs 6,000 on one clinic site. Rs 9,500 in the header of another, with Rs 6,000 in that same page’s own FAQ. Rs 10,900 across a set of near-identical landing pages that all describe themselves as the official site.

Not one of those pages prints an ingredient list. For a product asking six to eleven thousand rupees, that is the part we would want explained before anything else.

One thing your chemist may not mention

Tamsulosin and the tadalafil-type tablets can drop blood pressure hard when taken together. Dvago sells Fildil and Ciafil in the same urology category as Tamsolin, with no warning anywhere on the page. If you are on an alpha blocker and someone offers you the other, ask a doctor first — not the man behind the counter.

Where NixMen sits, and where it does not

What is the best medicine for enlarged prostate in Pakistan?

It depends on what you want from it. For fast relief on a small budget, a urologist will start you on tamsulosin at roughly Rs 1,400 a month, and it works within days. If you want something you can take alongside that, without the sexual side effects of the DHT blockers, a multi-herb formula is the sensible category — and the table above lists everything by milligram so you can compare labels instead of taking our word for it.

Is herbal treatment better than tablets?

No, and anyone who tells you it is has something to sell. Tamsulosin acts on muscle tone faster than any herb in existence. What herbs can do that tamsulosin cannot is work on more than one thing at once and not require a prescription forever. The two are not competitors so much as different tools.

Can I take NixMen with tamsulosin?

Ask the doctor who wrote the prescription. He knows your blood pressure and your other tablets, and we do not.

Why is NixMen dearer than Prozon or Prostamen?

Seven actives against one, 815 mg against 270, and Salajeet that has been purified and tested for heavy metals rather than bought loose. Prozon at Rs 850 is a genuinely good product for what it is. It is one herb.

Does DRAP approve these products?
